To validate the opportunity, I conducted secondary research to understand the current landscape of musical discourse. I also scoured through user sentiment on existing music review platforms and social media platforms. Unsurprisingly, the research showed a strong, robust userbase, proven by record numbers and engagement across well-established platforms.
However, user sentiment revealed subtle but concerning nuances…
Since the initial research revealed mixed insights, I decided to analyze existing platforms with user-generated content. I chose these based on their popularity, frequency of use, and their standing among our user community. It helped me identify design opportunities for Platnm.
I personally used each one of these platforms and also analyzed their mobile UI, with the assumption that mobile phones are easier and more common among users when it comes to a social platform.
Following research and comparative analysis, I established guiding principles to serve as the foundation for the solution. These acted as our continuous reference point, ensuring every feature directly translated user needs into a cohesive solution.
Platnm should be designed to spark conversations. Every review should make it easy to reply, feeding into a conversation starter

Let users create a dynamic profile that authentically represents unique musical taste, with the option to customize as they wish.
Along with my team, we designed a sitemap for the app to provide a base to work off. Using that structure, we were also able to visualize user flows for each feature of the app. This went through multiple iterations, and provided direction to move to the UI design phase.
Building off our base structure, our team designed low and mid-fidelity wireframes in Figma to visualize Platnm in action
We shared progress with fellow music lovers at dedicated Generate events and collected feedback from potential users, which led to strategic pivots.
Some adjustments included moving the rating system from a 5-point to a more granular 10-point scale, adding a "Skip Recommendation" option, and replacing Like with Like AND Dislike.
